I’m Jessie Lynn McMains, aka Rust Belt Jessie (they/them)--a writer, zine-maker, artist, spoken word performer, small press owner, and teacher of workshops.
I have been a self-published and traditionally-published author since 1994. I am the author of several chapbooks, most recently forget the fuck away from me and The Girl With the Most Cake. I have been performing spoken word across the U.S. and Canada since 1998. I was the 2015-2017 Poet Laureate of Racine, Wisconsin. I was the recipient of the 2019 Hal Prize for poetry, and I’m a three-time Best of the Net nominee (twice for poetry, once for fiction). My writing has garnered comparisons to Jack Kerouac, Ammi Emergency, Aaron Cometbus, Lydia Lunch, Patti Smith, Diane Di Prima, and Francesca Lia Block. I’m the owner/editor of Bone & Ink Press, a small press which publishes books and chapbooks (and a lit mag which is currently on hiatus). I also teach workshops on memoir, journaling, poetry, zine-making, and various other related topics.
I am available for hire to teach workshops or give talks to adults and teenagers. My areas of interest and expertise are zines (I can teach/talk on anything from Zine-Making 101 to writing zines from your own life to zines as a tool of empowerment), memoir, journaling, poetry, and using the tarot as a writing tool.
I am also available for manuscript consultations in poetry or creative non-fiction, any length manuscript from micro-chap to full-length collection.
