About Me

I’m Jessie Lynn McMains, aka Rust Belt Jessie (they/them or she/her)--a writer, zine-maker, artist, musician, spoken word performer, small press owner, and teacher of workshops.

I have been a self-published and traditionally-published author since 1994. I am the author of several poetry chapbooks, most recently Wisconsin Death Trip, as well as What We Talk About When We Talk About Punk, a collection of non-fiction. My first full-length book of poetry, The Loneliest Show on Earth, was published by Bottlecap Press in February 2020. I have been performing spoken word across the U.S. and Canada since 1998, and my spoken word album, Self-Portrait with Ghosts and Trains, was released by Hello America Stereo Cassette in July 2021. I served as the Racine Writer-in-Residence from July-December 2021, and was the 2015-2017 Poet Laureate of Racine, Wisconsin. I was the recipient of the 2019 Hal Prize for poetry, and I’m a three-time Best of the Net nominee (twice for poetry, once for fiction). My writing has garnered comparisons to Daphne Gottlieb, Aaron Cometbus, Lydia Lunch, Patti Smith, Jack Kerouac, Diane Di Prima, and Francesca Lia Block. I’m the owner/editor of Bone & Ink Press, a small press which publishes books and chapbooks. I also teach workshops on memoir, journaling, poetry, zine-making, and various other related topics.

Hire Me

I am available for hire to teach workshops or give talks to adults and teenagers. My areas of interest and expertise are zines (I can teach/talk on anything from Zine-Making 101 to writing zines from your own life to zines as a tool of empowerment), memoir, journaling, poetry, and using the tarot as a writing tool.

I am also available for manuscript consultations in poetry or creative non-fiction, any length manuscript from micro-chap to full-length collection.
